The Lindenhof stands on the site of a 4th-century Roman fort and of a palace built in the 9th century by Charlemagne’s grandson; in 1798 the oath to the Helvetic Constitution was sworn here. Today it is a quiet square of lime trees and chess players, with a view of the Old Town, the Grossmünster, the Rathaus, the Limmat and the university.
