About Eating in Zurich: the back story

In the current MICHELIN Guide Switzerland, dated 2025, four Zurich restaurants hold Two Stars: The Restaurant at The Dolder Grand, IGNIV Zürich by Andreas Caminada, the Widder Restaurant and The Counter. Around them are One-Star tables from the Storchen’s La Rôtisserie to Shin, Neue Taverne and KLE, two of them meat-free, and a city of classics: the Kronenhalle, open since 1924, the guild houses on the Limmat and Hiltl, founded in 1898, which Zurich Tourism calls probably the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant.

The Two-Star tables

The Restaurant at The Dolder Grand, IGNIV Zürich by Andreas Caminada at the Marktgasse Hotel, the Widder Restaurant on the Rennweg and The Counter on the Bahnhofplatz each hold Two MICHELIN Stars in the 2025 guide.

The One-Star tables

In the Old Town, La Rôtisserie at the Storchen, ORSINI at Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Shin and the vegetarian Neue Taverne; by the lake, Eden Kitchen & Bar at La Réserve; in Kreis 3, 4 and 5, the vegan KLE, Wirtschaft im FRANZ and EquiTable; and Wöschi at Wollishofen. Sihlhalde at Gattikon, Sternen – Badstube at Wangen and Löwen – Apriori at Bubikon are close by.

Book ahead, especially from Thursday to Saturday; many of the starred tables close on Sundays and Mondays.

The classics

The Kronenhalle at Bellevue, where Zurich Tourism notes original works by Chagall, Picasso and Miró on the walls, is known for its Zürcher Geschnetzeltes; the guild houses on the Limmat, among them Haus zum Rüden, serve in rooms that belong to guilds dating back as far as 1336.

Good value

The MICHELIN Guide’s Bib Gourmand marks good cooking at moderate prices: in Zurich, La Bottega di Mario, the Widder’s Boucherie AuGust, the Bauernschänke, Gaijin Izakaya, DAR, Gül, Josef, Barranco, Rigiblick and Freilager La Trattoria.

Our advice: see our article on Zurich cuisine for the dishes to look for.
